In Memoriam: Dr. Florence L. Denmark (1931–2026)
The Eastern Psychological Association mourns the passing of our esteemed past president, Dr. Florence L. Denmark, who passed away on May 25, 2026 at the age of 95. Dr. Denmark served as EPA President from 1985–1986, leading our organization with the same brilliance, warmth, and visionary leadership that characterized her entire career.
Dr. Denmark was a towering figure and a true pioneer in social psychology, celebrated globally for her foundational work in the psychology of women and gender. Her groundbreaking research on gender roles, leadership, power, and social inequalities radically reshaped the discipline and opened vital doors for generations of women in science and academia.
Dr. Denmark’s legacy spans beyond her leadership at the EPA. She served as the President of the American Psychological Association (APA) in 1980, the International Council of Psychologists, the New York State Psychological Association, and Psi Chi. As an educator, mentor, and advocate, her influence is woven into the very fabric of modern psychology.
We extend our deepest condolences to her family, colleagues, and the countless students and professionals whose lives she touched. Her enduring spirit, advocacy, and profound contributions will never be forgotten.
